Meet Spike – The Hissing Mommy’s Boy

Spike is a special cat with a quirky twist—he can’t meow. Instead of the typical meow, when Spike opens his mouth, it sounds like he’s hissing. “It sounds like he’s hissing, but he’s meowing,” his owner explains. After consulting with a vet, she learned that sometimes this happens with cats who are taken too early from their mothers and never learn how to meow properly.

Spike is deeply bonded with her husband. “He’s always sitting on his legs or right on his chest trying to get him to wake up,” she shares. In the middle of the night, Spike will sit there and claw at him repeatedly until he wakes up. She suspects that Spike prefers her husband because he doesn’t manhandle him. “I’m always picking him up and squeezing him and hugging him and kissing him,” she admits.

Spike has been a part of her life since she was 21. “I’m 33 now, so he’s quite the old boy,” she reflects. Spike has been her best friend for nearly 12 years, and their bond was instantaneous. “The first night I had him, he was curled up right on my shoulder the whole night,” she recalls. Although he was frightened of the new house, he felt comfortable with her and slept next to her face the entire night.

Hello Dru

Dru another Cat

Spike shares his home with another cat named Dru. While Spike merely tolerates Dru, Dru adores Spike. “Dru likes Spike a lot more than Spike likes Dru,” she notes with a chuckle. They are not best friends, but they spend a lot of time chasing each other and wrestling. Dru often tries to cuddle with Spike. “If he’s sleeping on a couch somewhere, she’ll go curl up right next to him, and usually he’ll tolerate it,” she adds. Dru’s affection for Spike gives off a little sister vibe, which Spike, for the most part, endures.

These two cats have brought immense joy to her life. She has struggled with mental health issues her whole life, and having her cats rely on her and bond with her has given her a reason to wake up every morning. “They’ve given me something to wake up every morning for. Every morning I wake up and I’m excited to see them,” she says with a smile.

Spike and Drew

Spike and Drew Perfectly in Love

Spike and Dru are more than just pets—they are her companions, her comfort, and her joy. Their presence in her life has been a source of unwavering love and stability. Spike, with his unique non-meow and affectionate quirks, and Dru, with her persistent attempts to snuggle up to Spike, have created a home filled with laughter and warmth.

For her, these moments with her cats are priceless. “They really bring so much joy to my life,” she says. Whether it’s Spike’s silent meows or Dru’s attempts to cuddle, every interaction with them lifts her spirits and fills her heart with love. Spike and Dru are a testament to the incredible bond between humans and their feline friends, providing companionship and unconditional love in the most delightful ways.
