When Victoria introduced her dog-loving future husband to her two beloved tortie cats, whom she’d cherished for 19 years, she never imagined she’d become the third wheel in the relationship. And believe it or not, this wasn’t a one-time thing!

In the scenic beauty of Colorado, Victoria found herself scrolling online when a stunning black cat caught her eye. Her girlfriend, who is devoted to feral rescue, was seeking a forever home for this handsome boy, and Victoria fell head over heels instantly. But with two cats already in the mix, her husband wasn’t quite as enthusiastic. “As soon as I saw his photo, I was smitten,” Victoria recalls with a grin. “I said, ‘I have to have him.’” Her husband, however, was concerned, especially about their alpha male cat. He feared the newcomer wouldn’t be welcomed.

Just as Victoria was ready to tell her friend they couldn’t adopt the cat, her husband had a surprising change of heart. “I said, ‘Okay, I’ll let her know we can’t take the cat.’ And he looked at me and said, ‘Well, do you want the cat?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ And he replied, ‘Well, let’s get on a plane and bring him home!’”

From the moment they met Huey, it was clear he was special. “I was thrilled when I first saw him,” Victoria remembers. “All I could see were these huge, bat-like ears.” Huey’s unique features, including a missing left rear paw that resembled a pirate’s peg leg, only added to his charm, and they were ecstatic that he bonded with them immediately.

The real magic, however, happened at home. They anxiously introduced Huey to their dominant cat, Rudy, and their shy tortie, Lucy. To their amazement, the transition was smoother than expected. “My husband and I were both surprised at how quickly it happened,” Victoria marveled. “They were actually reaching paws under the door within the first 48 hours!”

Huey and Rudy Become BFFs

Despite initial worries, their senior cat, Rudy, developed a particular fondness for Huey. “It was nerve-wracking at first,” Victoria admits, “especially with Rudy being an alpha male.” But these two felines, brought together by fate, exceeded everyone’s expectations. “The boys are bonded,” Victoria declared with a proud smile. “When you see one, the other’s not usually far behind. They’re the best of friends.”

Huey’s arrival brought immense joy to her husband as well. He found solace in Huey’s gentle presence. “My husband’s actually a veteran, so he registered Huey as an emotional support animal,” Victoria explained. “The cats really do soothe his soul.”

But this wasn’t the first time Victoria’s husband bonded with one of her cats. Back when they first met, the self-proclaimed dog lover became her senior cats’ favorite human. “I had these cats for 18 and 19 years, and it got to the point where I’d come home, and they’d both go straight to him,” Victoria laughs. Over the years, the addition of Rudy, Lucy, and now Huey has turned him into a true cat dad.

Huey’s story is more than just a heartwarming tale of adoption; it’s a testament to the power of second chances. “Adoption and rescue are so important,” Victoria emphasized. “Adopt, don’t shop. I back that 100%.”
